Dear User, Here are detailed instructions on how to download and install the database. There are three steps in this process :- 1. Download the program. 2. De-Archive the program 3. Install the program. Downloading the Program :- ========================== To download the program you usually 'click' on the icon on my web-page which indicates that this is the location of the download. There are usually 5 versions of my database - One for Psion Series 3 / SIBO One for Psion Series 5 / Revo / EPOC, One for Microsoft Access Users, One for Palm3/5 Users (using HanDBase or JFile), One generic database file format called 'CSV'. (Almost every database application written these days should be able to load a CSV file). On Windows, you will probably be asked whether :- 1. You want to run the program immediately. 2. You want to save the file to disc. You should save the file to disc. Remember the location where you saved the file for future reference. De-Archive the program :- ========================= You need to de-archive the files first before you attempt to load them onto your palmtop. An archive is a compressed form of a file. To give an example, my full drug database is over 600,000 characters long, but archived the file is only 320,000 characters long. You can identify that a file is 'archived', because it has the '.zip' suffix. Archiving is done to increase the speed whereby files are downloaded from the internet, and therefore minimise phone costs. You can also pack many separate files into a single archive, so you only need download one file. To de-archive my database, you will need an archiving / de-archiving program. You can download these free from the internet. I suggest you use 'WinZip' which you can get from www.winzip.com If you are going to download using your Psion, then a suitable Archiving / De-archiving program is 'RMRZip'. (Available from www.rmrsoft.com) After running WinZip, you will see that the archive contains two files : One file is a 'Helpfile' telling you about the database, and the other file is the database itself. You should extract the database from the archive, and save it to a known location / folder onto your PC. The instructions to do this will be within the de-archiving program you have chosen to use. Installing the Program :- ========================= The file is now on a directory on your PC. It needs to be transferred *unchanged* onto a directory on your Psion / Palm machine. For Psion / EPOC :- =================== The program most people use to carry out this process is 'PsiWin'. If you have an Acorn computer, it will be 'PsiRisc', 'PsiFS' or 'ArcLink5'. If you have a Macintosh computer, it will be 'PsiMac'. Most programs accomplish this by dragging and dropping the file icon from the location you saved it at onto your Psion folder. Don't attempt to convert the file or use the EPOC installer as this won't work. Once transferred across, the Psion should automatically recognise this file as a database file, and you should now be able to run it for the first time. For Palm Machines :- ==================== Unlike EPOC machines, Palm & PocketPC handhelds don't come bundled with a database application. You will need to download, (+/- buy), and install the database application, before you attempt to copy over my drug database. Only once the database application is installed on your machine will you then be able to transfer over and view the database itself. My drug database has been tested on the HanDBase & JFile database programs. The HanDBase database application is available from www.ddhsoftware.com The JFile database application is available from www.land-j.com You should use your docking station along with the supplied connection software to transfer over the application and then the database. Once the file is on your machine, run the HanDBase / JFile program and open the database file from the appropriate menu. I hope this helps. -- Jason Dr Jason Wolfe www.jwolfe.clara.net
